Purple Milkweed (Asclepias purpurascens)
Plant Type: This is a herbaceous plant, it is a perennial which can reach 100cm in height (39inches).
Leaves: The leaves are alternate. Leaves can reach 12cm in length (5inches). Each leaf is entire.
Flowers: The flowers have 5 Regular Parts. They are purple. Blooms first appear in late spring and continue into mid summer.
Habitat: Dry fields, rocky ground, thin woods and borders
Range: Much of eastern and midwestern United States except deep south. Very scattered locations. Rare

Similar Species: Common Milkweed, A. syriaca and Butterfly Weed, A. tuberosa are similar in form but the purple flowers are unique to this species.
