Ophioglossaceae / Adder's-tongue
Engelmann's Adder's-tongue (Ophioglossum engelmannii)
Engelmann's Adder's-tongue is also known as Limestone Adderstongue.

Plant Type: This is a fern which can reach 14cm in height (5.5inches). Plants generally appear in April but the season may extend from march to late summer in some areas.
Leaves: This plant has basal leaves only. Leaves can reach 8cm in length (3inches). Leaves can be as wide as 3.2 cm (1.25inches). There is only a single, entire leaf.
Flowers: No flowers
Habitat: Cedar glades, barrens and other open limestone areas that are at least seasonally moist.
Range: Arizona to Pennsylvania and all states south.

The author is the Curator of Ferns at the Smithsonian Institution and A Murray Evans, Professor of Botany at the University of Tennessee took the excellent photographs traveling all over North America to accomplish the task.
